Anytime, Anywhere Learning

Technology has given us the tools to offer educational opportunities that fit into all lifestyles; anytime and anywhere.  Synchronous and asynchronous are two methods of e-learning; both having the potential to meet learner needs.  However, instructors and designers must know their audience, content, and learner’s technology level before choosing which approach to use.
Synchronous learning carries a more traditional classroom design, providing real-time discussions, collaborative tasks, and consistent interactions with instructors.  Synchronous learning is conducted on a schedule, relying upon both students and instructors to be available at the same time.  This can be a challenge for students, who may not have the time to dedicate to a lecture schedule.
Synchronous environments produce high levels of student engagement, relationship building opportunities, increases in retention levels, and reductions of student isolation with peer to peer interactions.  This approach is beneficial for students who need guidance and require immediate feedback.  Zoom, Drawing Boards, and Nearpod are all used in synchronous learning environments.

Asynchronous learning is an independent approach to education, offering students control to self-pace the class.  This is the anytime, anywhere pathway to learning by interacting with knowledge through gamification, video, written works, virtual field trips, and listening to podcasts. Asynchronous is the method for students who have heavy schedules, are parents, or working adults.
Asynchronous environments offer learners time to reflect and explore a deeper curiosity of the subject.  Flexibility is key in asynchronous learning, allowing students to personalize their learning.  This method of e-learning requires discipline, time management, and to work independently without instructor guidance to be successful.
